More on the Sticky Pod and Two Suction Cup GPS Mount

suction cup gps mount After my recent review of the sticky pod, a suction cup camera mount, I have got several questions. The most common was: Have you had the suction cup fail?

I haven't had problems with a camera mounting so far. However, I do not keep the camera on deck very long, just for a shooting session. I also rinse the deck before mounting the sticky pod.

The suction cup when pushed by a wave or knocked by a paddle can slide on a wet deck.

I have had a couple of failures with my gps mount. The GPS stays on a deck during the entire paddling. Typically, I mount the GPS before carrying a kayak to water and neglect cleaning the deck.

These suction cups do not work very well in very cold temperatures (well below freezing).

Yesterday, I tested a new mount for my Garmin gpsmap 76cs based on two suction cups from the sticky pod system. I connected these two cups with a strip of aluminum and attached an original Garmin mount to it. The mount worked fine, however, the entire setup is a little bit to high for a narrow Thunderbolt kayak and there is a risk to knock it with a paddle. It should work better for wider decks.

If you decide to order the sticky pod, the best deal is to buy My Sticky Pod - a platform with three suction cups, a knuckle and extension. You will pay less than buying a single cup, knuckle and extension separately. You can always dismount the suction cups from the platform and use them in any configuration.
