When I paddle on the South Platte upstream of Evans Riverside Park I usually end up in the old river leg below the Lower Latham Ditch dam. The water does not flow directly to this river leg in typical winter flow, but filtrates under the dam. So, this river leg is shallow and crystal clear. With some care you can paddle as close as 100 yards to the dam. It is where a flock of plastic decoy geese reside. It looks like they sit there all winter, but I have never seen any hunters there.
Of course, there are live geese in this area as well. It is where I shot goose tracks on snow during one of my previous paddling trips. The picture above was shot on February 18 with my Pentax Optio W10 when paddling Thunderbolt kayak.
