Paddling in the Rain and Wind on the Horsetooth Reservoir

The long and narrow Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins, CO can provide some challenging weather for paddling.

On Friday evening (05/04/2007) I was paddling my Thunderbolt kayak from the South Bay to the Dixon Cove (first picture) in heavy rain showers. I had the lake for myself.

On Sunday (05/06/2007) I paddled the Thunderbolt again from the South Bay to the Soldier Cove (third picture) and then to North Eltuck Cove in Lory State Park where my wife was waiting for me - a 6 mile paddle against a strong 20-30 mph headwind and 1-2' feet waves. It was a quite challenging paddle, but a good training building my confidence in the Thunderbolt. I wouldn't like to cross the lake sideway to these waves and wind though.

The nice thing about the Horsetooth is that you can always find almost calm conditions in deep coves as seen in my remaining pictures (2, 4-6) shot before sunset around the North Eltuck Cove after paddling. Camera: Pentax Optio W10 (I would love to have my DSLR camera with a tripod for that photo session).
