Friends Don't Let Friends Go to Missouri


We spent the weekend of June 28 / July 1 in Lawrence, Kansas. After the 50 mile Kansas River "Fitty Gritty" Race I shot a few pictures in downtown and along the river including that T-shirt above. The race started at a boat ramp about a mile below the dam visible in my snapshots.

By the way, driving through Kansas is not so boring as some Missourians claim ... We took highway 36 through northern Kansas on our way to Lawrence. In two weeks we will be driving again across eastern Colorado and the entire Kansas to Kansas City for the start of the 2nd Missouri River 340 Race.

The 132 year old Bowersock Mills & Power Company is the only hydroelectric plant in Kansas. Comprised of 7 hydroelectric turbines, the plant is capable of producing 2.5 MW of energy. Originally, the dam was providing the city with mechanical power. See the company history.
