Shark Story: Great White and Kayaker Picture - Real or Fake?

great white shark and kayak

This nice though scary picture is circulating around web lately. A kayaker dream or nightmare? A real picture or manipulation? Not so far ago, there was that video clip of a killer whale and a kayaker running around. It had appeared to be a hoax extracted from some Japanese commercial clip. Can we believe in what see on internet?

I have seen the above picture for the fist time at South African surfski.info followed by interesting comments:

  • the picture is real from National Geographic article
  • it is a photoshop manipulation (it's visible on the larger picture version)
  • he picture may be fake but the situation is real: "I can assure you most of us have been followed by a Johnny like this while paddling...we were just never aware of it or saw him/her."
  • kayaks are used to observe and research great white sharks

Well, I hope that when paddling around Florida in March I will be scared only by a surprised manatee. Somebody (at Watertribe forum, I guess) commented on Florida paddling: Forget those gators and snakes, watch for golf balls!
