Neutral Density (ND) Filters for Paddling Photography

In response to my experiments with a polarizer filter and Pentax Optio W10 camera, Rambo from Rambo Locker sent me a tip about using neutral density (ND) for paddling photography:
Hi Marek, I noticed you have tried Polarized filters on your W10. I found neutral density filters give a better result. Your can buy ND filter in flexible sheet form and just cut out the size you want with scissors. Try adding 2 or three layers till you get the effect you want. I find it invaluable for shooting in bright sunlight on the GoPro, W10 and my new 520 line bullet cam with 137 degree wide angle (same as human eye) and much cheaper. It’s optical grade and movie studios use heaps of it. Also great to use in front of your computer screen to reduce glare.

Cheers Rambo

Thanks, Rambo! I believe that ND filter may reduce problems with washout colors in pictures during midday shooting.

You can buy ND filters as 20x24" sheet from BH Photo and Video (Gam CineFilter 20x24" Sheet at different densities, $6.50). If you install a filter mount to your Pentax Optio camera you can use a glass ND filter, but these are more expensive.

I am going to run more experiments with my Pentax Optio W10 using a collection of filters from my DSLR camera. It would be nice to find some open water in my neighborhood and do these tests during paddling.
