A New Shooting Angle - Camera Video Mast on Thunderbolt Kayak

In the end of May I had a chance to perform first tests with my new camera support, 50" telescoping mast - waterproof Pentax Optio W30 camera is mounted on the end of a photographic monopod which, in turn, is attached with the other end to my sticky pod (3 suction cup camera mount). I will post details of this design after some more testing.

I set up my camera in interval (time lapse rate) mode, mounted the mast on a stern deck of the Thunderbolt kayak, and did some paddling and shooting on the Horsetooth Reservoir.

Some comments after these preliminary tests:

  • The 50" extended mast with a light compact camera affected stability of my tippy kayak much more than I expected. I was a little bit nervous paddling through boat wakes.
  • With a fully extended mast I wasn't able to see the camera display, so all pictures were shot without any preview and composition is pretty poor. I posted all pictures without any cropping or rotation.
  • I was not sure if I can shoot any sharp pictures due to rapid movement of the camera mounted high above a deck of my tippy boat. However, most of the pictures turned to be sharp and technically OK.
  • The last picture below was shot with a flash set up on "soft".
  • With a telescoping monopod as a mast I can change the camera height above deck from 20" to 50", but in my first experiments I was shooting at full height only.
  • The open space on the Thunderbolt is somewhat limited for the 3 suction cup sticky pod. See: Can I Fit the Sticky Pod Camera Mount on a Deck of My Kayak?
  • The camera mast together with the sticky pod worked fine. Of course, my T-bolt is not the best photography platform. On the other hand, I was able to show a skinny bow and hull of this kayak, while in the pictures shot from a cockpit at eye level it looks like a fat sea kayak.
