Catching High Water on the South Platte River

A couple days of rain increased water level in the South Platte River from around 100 cfs during dry summer to 2000 cfs at Kersey. I managed to catch the high water wave in this late afternoon bike-packraft trip: Kuner-Kersey-Kuner.

CLC Patuxent 19.5 Stitch-and-Glue Kayak

July 11, 2009. A keyhole cockpit of the Patuxent 19.5 kayak - a plywood stitch-and-glue boat from Cheasapeke Light Craft. Camera: Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.

I built Patuxent in my garage from a kit in 2009. The choice of a fast kayak was not dictated by my racing interest, but rather by a photography. I just needed a fast way to reach my shooting destinations. Racing came later. I paddled Patuxent on San Marcos and Guadelupe rivers in 2001 in my first training for the Texas Water Safari, but run the race in Spencer Xtreme canoe. The only race done in the Patuxent was the Colorado River Race in the upper Glenwood Canyon. I still paddle the Patuxent kayak mostly in a recreation and photography mode.

Marek – what do you know about the condition of the South Platte put-ins/take-outs and river courses traditionally used by the Joint Clubs March event? Poudre and RMCC are organizing for 2015 and looking for information

    Thanks!

I haven’t paddled the South Platte this year yet. Last year, I paddled the river around Kuner and Kersey – no significant changes in river character or access after flooding there. I haven’t seen Riverside Park in Evans after re-opening. I may have some updates in the next couple of weeks.

Hi Marek – Great pictures! This canoe stabilizer and platform may help if you have a tripod on your Penobscot.

Hi Larry. I go to southwestern Wyoming where my dad lives and saretm fish with sinners and do some fly fishing. Been doing it every year since I was in third grade. Lots of water up there this year so fishing was slow but still fun. Love to pan fry smaller trout or wrap them in tin foil with some butter and garlic and put them on a grill or in the coals of a camp fire for about 30 minutes. Can’t go wrong with either method.RG
