3 x 340 Miles on Missouri River: from 98 to 50 Hours

I added a story by Katie Pfefferkorn to the 3 years of Missouri River 340 Race series posted in my Fitness Paddling blog. Katie paddled MR340 three times solo finishing in 98, 58, and 50 hours.

There are not so many women in that ultra marathon race. Male paddlers dominate. However, I just noticed that half of 3 times finishers (Bryan Hopkins, West Hansen, Christina Glauner, Chuck and Di McHenry, Katie Pfefferkorn) are girls. They must more persistent in that madness than boys. I would spoil this perfect statistcs a little bit if I add myself.

Paddling Photography a Year Ago – March 2008

Not too much activity in this blog, but training and racing on the South Platte River I covered in my companion Fitness Paddling blog. I paddled mostly WSBS Thunderbolt-X kayak, but I was tried Spencer X-treme canoe.

3 Years of Missouri River 340 Race

340 miles on the Missouri River from Kansas City to St Charles in less than 100 hours. The MR340 Race started in 2006 with 15 boats. Next year over 70 boats entered. Last year we saw 150 boats at the start in Kaw Point and 250 boat is expected this August.

I am running a little series in my fitness paddling blog devoted to 3 years of MR340 race – stories by three time finishers. So far, we have the following parts:

1. Bryan Hopkins
2. West Hansen
3. Christina Glauner
4. Chuck and Di McHenry

Group Paddling Workout on the South Platte River

2×5 mile paddling workout on the South Platte River: upstream from Kersey to the Plumb Ditch dam and back down the river, about 3 hours with some playing and shooting at the dam.

A Log Jam on the South Platte River

The South Platte River below Denver is quite open and usually obstacles are limited to diversion dams. Occasionally, you may loose a deep water channel and be forced to drag your kayak through shallows.

However, during my last weekend paddling I encountered a real log jam blocking the entire river. I launched my Thunderbolt kayak at Evans Riverside Park and paddled about 5 miles upstream. Weather was great for a paddling workout, but not so good for photography.

I found this log jam just below the mouth of the Big Thomson River. It was no problem to walk around it and it would be possible to paddle there with a little higher water. So, that log jam was more like a attraction on the river than a real obstacle. Log jams on the narrow San Marcos River during Texas Water Safari were completely different story.

Paddling Photography a Year Ago – January/February 2008

A lot of paddling and training on the South Platte River launching at Milliken, Evans, or Kersey. In the end of February, I started my lake paddling season on the Boyd Lake. There was still some floating ice.
